NOBTS Scholarships

Explanation:

NOBTS offers monetary awards each semester; these grants and scholarships are based on need and are intended to help offset the cost of tuition for students.

Philosophy for awarding scholarships:

Our philosophy for awarding scholarships is to help the greatest number of students possible who demonstrate financial need.  Various factors are taken into consideration, with the most common being family type (single, married, married with kids, etc.), other sources of financial assistance, geographic location of home church, and degree program at NOBTS.

How scholarships are awarded:

Most scholarships have stipulations (family type, home state, NOBTS degree, etc) directing the award process; when scholarships are awarded, need as well as stipulations have to be met.  Some NOBTS scholarships are awarded by foundations and executive boards, which fund their respective scholarships and choose specific recipients.  Though NOBTS administers these awards, the selection of recipients for some foundation awards is handled by parties other than NOBTS.

Qualifications for NOBTS Scholarships:

  • 1. Students must complete an on-line scholarship application during April (for the up-coming Fall) and September (for the up-coming Spring).
  • 2. To receive most scholarships, a student must have completed one semester at NOBTS. See the ‘New NOBTS Students' section for important information for first-time NOBTS students.
  • 3. A student must be full-time in a specified program (refer to the current catalog for full-time status requirements and to determine which courses count toward full-time status).
  • 4. The applicant's account must be current, i.e., any student who owes the seminary money cannot receive a scholarship for the up-coming semester.

FACTS

A FACTS plan allows students to break their tuition into monthly payments rather than having to pay it all before the first day of class. Interest does NOT accrue on the payments, and the only extra cost is $25 per agreement.  FACTS can be used to budget any tuition costs, including workshops, Internet courses and independent studies (though expenses such as books, rent, and other seminary-related items cannot be included in a FACTS plan).  While bank draft is the most common method to pay for a FACTS plan, students may use a credit card.  However, the use of a credit card changes the payment options and will incur a convenience fee charge on each payment.  Contact the Financial Aid Office for currently accepted credit cards.

Qualifications:

  • 1. Any student in good standing with NOBTS may use FACTS.
  • 2. FACTS can only be used for tuition. All other school-related expenses must be paid to the Business Office.

How FACTS works:

  • 1. A student must complete a FACTS agreement on-line through I.Q. Web.
  • 2. If a student is not able to use I.Q. Web, please contact the ITC department for assistance.
  • 3. FACTS will deduct a $25 processing fee as soon as the agreement is entered into their system.
  • 4. A down payment will be drafted from the specified account on the day an agreement is submitted.
  • 5. FACTS will charge an Insufficient Fund Fee (NSF) for each returned payment (in addition to the overdraft fee likely charged by your bank).
  • 6. Following an NSF, a second attempt to draft the money will occur 15 days later. If this fails as well, the agreement will likely be terminated, and future use of the FACTS system may be jeopardized.
  • 7. Any down payment returned NSF will result in an automatic termination of the current FACTS agreement.

Outside Seminary Funding

NOBTS does not accept any government funds.  This includes Pell grants and Stafford Loans (therefore, students do not need to complete the FAFSA form).  However, prepaid state programs, VA benefits, or the GI Bill are accepted; students should contact the Business Office for more information if they qualify for one of these programs.

There are numerous resources that a student can pursue to acquire educational funds.  A few areas to pursue are: 1) your home church or current church; 2) the association to which your home or current church belongs; 3) the Baptist foundation for your home state (a list of these is provided on the Financial Aid website); 4) people who care about you and may want to make a contribution toward this important season of your life; 5) non-NOBTS scholarships, some of which are listed on our website.

To get immediate credit for funds from an outside seminary source, the student must have a letter sent to the Financial Aid Office; for this credit to be applied to the up-coming semester, the letter must be received before the first day of class.  It is the responsibility of the student to make sure that any fund promised to them is received by NOBTS.

Loans

NOBTS does not offer a loan program through our institution, but we do work with independent financial institutions that offer educational loans.  You may apply with the bank that you currently use or any other lender, as long as you are applying for an educational or Signature loan.  To see an up-to-date list of available lenders, please refer to the Financial Aid website or contact the Financial Aid Office.

Loans must be for educational purposes only; these educational purposes may include: tuition, fees, books, and some living or commuting expenses. For educational and Signature loans, payments can be deferred as long as you are a full-time student, but the interest on the loan begins accruing immediately. For this reason, the Financial Aid Office advises each student to take out the lowest amount possible for either a semester, or a year at the most, rather than a large amount to cover your entire time at NOBTS.

New NOBTS Students

NOBTS offers a select number of scholarships each semester for in-coming students who will be attending the New Orleans campus during their first semester of Leavell College or seminary education. The only qualification for a First Semester Student Scholarship is that full-time student status must be maintained the entire semester of the award (see the student catalog to determine the full-time requirements).

Application for these scholarships can be made by completing the Prospective and First Semester Student Information Form on the Financial Aid website or by completing a paper form in the Financial Aid Office.  This form will serve as your application for a First Semester Student Scholarship. The deadline for a Fall New Student Scholarship application is July 15th; the deadline for a Spring New Student Scholarship application is December 1st.

Three other important matters for in-coming students:

  • 1) If you are a Louisiana undergraduate student who is eligible for TOPS, you must contact the Financial Aid Office to inform us of this.
  • 2) For all new students, during your first semester at NOBTS you will want to begin applying for NOBTS scholarships. Applications are available on-line during September for the up-coming Spring and during April for the up-coming Fall.
  • 3) In-coming students are encouraged to reference the information and resources provided throughout this brochure and on the Financial Aid website. In addition, feel free to contact the Financial Aid Office at any time.
