New Orleans Happenings
Things to do in New Orleans
Sports
Cheer on Drew Brees of the New Orleans Saints in the Louisiana Superdome, or Chris Paul of the New Orleans Hornets in the New Orleans Arena. Attend the New Orleans Bowl, the Sugar Bowl, New Orleans Zephyrs minor league baseball, and other occasional events such as the BCS College football championship, NCAA basketball regionals and the Final Four, Olympic trials, and many other sporting events.
Cultural and Seasonal Events
South Louisiana is a melting pot of cultures. Festivals and special events take place throughout the year celebrating ethnic culture and special foods. Mardi Gras is one of the most famous festivals, of course. There are family-friendly Mardi Gras parades that adults and children will love. At Christmas, see the magnificent light displays in the "Celebration in the Oaks" in City Park, or take a street car down St. Charles Avenue to see the decorations around the antebellum mansions.
A Touch of History
New Orleans was a regional capital before George Washington was born. Visit antebellum plantations, the site of the Battle of New Orleans in 1815, historic houses, and unique cemeteries. See Jackson Square, with the historic Cabildo and St. Louis Cathedral, the oldest cathedral in North America. You'll be amazed at the huge new World War II Museum.
For the Children
New Orleans has events for children as well as adults. See the world-class Aquarium of the Americas with its IMAX theater, the excellent Audobon Zoo, the Audobon Isectarium, a children's museum, paddle wheeler rides on the Mississippi River, Storyland and recreational activities at City Park, swamp tours to see alligators or enjoy the sun by Lake Ponchartrain, on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, or in the Seminary pool. The Seminary gym has sports and recreational activities, as well as play soccer in Sunshine Park and several other locations on campus.
Music
New Orleans is famous for its music, of course, with jazz at Preservation Hall, the House of Blues, the world famous two week Jazz Fest, the French Quarter Festival, the Essence Music Festival, the Satchmo Summer Festival, and dozen other events in the New Orleans Arena, the UNO Arena, and dozen of other venues.
