Current and Ongoing Projects

Ongoing projects at the CNTTS include the following:

  • We are currently working on a critical apparatus for the entire New Testament that will be packaged with Bible software. The module for the Gospels should be out this spring with Accordance Software (OakTree Software Co.), with plans to include Acts and the General Epistles by the end of the year and the Paulines plus Revelation by the end of 2005. The software will include a minimum of 50 witnesses for the text, with the papyri and major uncial manuscripts included as well as selected minuscule and versional evidence (Old Latin at this stage, with further additions planned after the initial NT project is completed). Sources for the database include collations done by the CNTTS as well as information from Tischendorf, Swanson, von Soden, Legg, and the IGNTP Luke and John (Papyri only) volumes.
  • We regularly work in conjunction with the International Greek New Testament Project (IGNTP). The cooperation includes supplying collations for the project, maintaining like standards for collations/collators, aiding the work of the IGNTP through microfilm acquisitions that are beneficial to both groups, and furnishing logistical support to the IGNTP at no cost to that group.
  • The IGNTP and the CNTTS are working with Dr. Maurice Robinson on the assimilation of a critical database on the Pericope Adulterae passage based upon the collation work done by Dr. Robinson. Dr. Robinson has collated all or nearly all manuscripts for that passage and plans on a major forthcoming work based upon this endeavor.
  • We have ongoing collation work on numerous NT manuscripts. While all types of textual witnesses are studied, we major on minuscule manuscripts.
  • For those interested in collating, we offer workshops or independent continuing education opportunities for visiting scholars and students (from outside institutions as well). While the training can be tailored to the needs of the individual, normally the emphasis is on manuscript studies and collation procedures.
  • The influence of the lectionary cycles on the text of the New Testament is being studied with special reference to possible influence from the liturgical settings and lectionaries toward the continuous text manuscripts.
  • For more formal study, two separate Master's level courses in textual criticism are offered and two Ph.D. doctoral seminars. The M.A./M.Div. courses include a general introduction to NT TC and an advanced study of palaeography and manuscript reading/collating. The Ph.D. seminars emphasize methodology issues, current trends, and specialized manuscript studies alongside the research of the student.

“[Instructions on Worship] I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone— for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness.”
