Office 365 Frequently Asked Questions

NOBTS in partnership with Microsoft is now offering a limited* online version of Office 365 to students for free! Students who request this service will have access to the latest versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, and more for as long as they're a student here and the program continues.

* This version of Office 365 is a limited online version. Certain formatting features are not present that are required with Turabian and other formatting styles (MLA, APA, SBL). If you wish to have the full-featured Office 365 suite, you will need to purchase it from a Microsoft vendor.

1. I've completed the form, now what?

After you submit the Office 365 enrollment form, you will receive an e-mail within 72 hours of submission with a temporary password and instructions on how to log in to your new Office 365 account.

2. What is my Office 365 user account?

Your Office 365 user account will match your Selfserve account. For example, if your Selfserve account is jsmith, your office 365 account will be jsmith@office.nobts.edu.

3. I have my Office 365 user account and temporary password, where do I sign in?

You can log in to your Office 365 user account at portal.office.com.

4. I forgot my password, how do I reset it? Help!

Best Method: When you first log into your newly created account, Microsoft asks you for a phone number (to text or call) and an email address to verify your account in case you should forget your password. To reset your password, go to portal.office.com and click the link below the "Sign in" box that says "Can't access your account?" Then follow the instructions and provide the necessary information to reset your password.

Alternate Method (Not Immediate): You may also call our helpdesk at (504) 816-8180 or email us at itcsupport@nobts.edu (Please supply your User Account, E-mail Address, and Student ID Number in the e-mail). Our team will respond to reset requests during normal business hours (excluding holidays).

5. Does Office 365 provide students with a NOBTS student email?

No, Office 365 uses the e-mail the student provided in the enrollment form. Any e-mails sent to <username>@office.nobts.edu will bounce back as no reply.

6. Why can't I download Microsoft Office to my computer?

NOBTS is offering only the online version of Office 365 to students. Office 365 is a free service of Microsoft. For our institution to provide the full version of Office 365, it would cost the school $6 per user, per month. ($72/yr.) For a student to purchase Office 365 University Education, it would cost them $80 for a 4-year period. For more information about Office 365 University Edition, click here.

7. I'm experiencing difficulties with Office 365, does the ITC help troubleshoot issues?

In partnering with Microsoft, the ITC of NOBTS will help with issues only relating to account specific issues (e.g. sign in, username, password).  Any application specific issues or questions (e.g. Word, PowerPoint, Excel) should be directed toward Microsoft support. 8. Where can I find some helpful tutorials and resources for Office 365?

9. If I'm no longer a student, will I continue to have access to Office 365 following my graduation?

Currently Microsoft has given NOBTS unlimited student licenses to give out. With any online service, terms and conditions may change at Microsoft's discretion. However, NOBTS has no plans at this time to purge accounts after graduation. In the event that Microsoft's terms and conditions should change, former students will be notified by the e-mail address they supplied through enrollment.
