We are thrilled to announce the establishment of the Ernie Baker (“Big EZ”) Christian Ministry Scholarship at New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary (NOBTS) and Leavell College in honor of his 5th home-going anniversary. This scholarship aims to support students called to vocational ministry, helping them pursue their theological education and prepare to serve wherever God calls them.
Ernest (Ernie) Dysart Baker was the father of Dr. Tara Dew, wife of James K. Dew, Jr (the 9th president of NOBTS and Leavell College). Born in Buffalo, NY, Ernie moved to Florida during childhood, where he later attended Florida Technological University (now known as the University of Central Florida) and earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in electrical engineering. After a long career as an executive with IBM, he founded multiple software companies for offshore investors in Raleigh, NC, and served as President and CEO. Ernie was married to Linda for 43 years, and they had three children: Tara, Leah, and Nick.
Ernie was a devoted Christian who loved Jesus. Because of his faith, he was truly content in whatever circumstance he found himself, including times of plenty and want (Philippians 4:11-13). He had a special interest in helping those called to ministry and regularly offered support to seminary students needing assistance as they prepared for a life of service. He supported Dr. Dew as he received his Master of Divinity degree, and served beside the Dews in both a church plant as well as their first pastorate in Wake Forest, NC.
Ernie was a constant source of love, support, and encouragement. Just one month before the Dews moved to New Orleans, Ernie passed away following a courageous 9-year battle with Multiple Myeloma, a blood cancer. His legacy now lives on through this scholarship, which helps other men and women prepare for gospel ministry.
We invite you to partner with us in growing this scholarship. A recurring donation would be best, but of course, any amount is appreciated and will directly support these future servants. A donation of $75 per month ($900/year) covers the cost of one 3-hour credit course. Donations of $225 per month will cover the student’s full tuition. We hope to continue his legacy by providing financial assistance to deserving students committed to spreading the gospel. Thank you for helping us do that!
