NOBTS family gathered for a chapel service Feb. 24 celebrating Larry Lyon’s appointment as the new president of Truett McConnell University.

Lyon, senior vice president for business administration and professor of ethics, was unanimously elected as president in a special-called meeting of the Truett McConnell Board of Trustees on Monday, Feb. 2.  He will officially begin his duties as president of TMU on April 1.

Lyon has served at NOBTS for more than six years after he was appointed by NOBTS President Jamie Dew in his first official act as president.

The chapel service featured Dew and Lyon discussing his time at NOBTS and transition to TMU.

Dew described Lyon as one of his closest friends and spoke about their journey of coming to NOBTS from Southeastern Seminary where they both previously served together.

Lyon shared about his background of growing up in Georgia as well as a brief story of his Christian testimony and call to ministry.

He expressed gratitude for his time at NOBTS and gave a final encouragement to the seminary family about faithfulness.

“Above all else, be faithful to the Lord,” Lyon said. “The work that we are called to do is hard. Reaching lost people and serving the Church, these are incredibly difficult tasks. It is only in the Lord’s strength that we stand any chance to do this work. If you will continue being faithful to the Lord and his Word, there is nothing better in this life.”

Dew expressed his gratitude for Lyon’s service to the seminary and encouraged NOBTS students training for ministry to follow his example.

“Part of this moment is to celebrate Larry and Stephanie, but we also know that you all are preparing for ministry and that will mean that you will also come to similar moments of decision,” Dew said.

“I have watched Larry for years and he has always been humble and faithful. It has been an immense pleasure linking arms to serve with you at NOBTS and there is a genuine smile in my heart watching how God has raised you up to lead TMU.”
